Launch to workspace

Hi,

I am using gnome on Mandrake 9.1 (metacity + gnome 2.2). I want to 
launch a load of apps to particular workspaces on startup, most of them 
aren't session aware so how can I do this?

Is there a command-line app launcher which can launch an app to a 
particular workspace? If not would it be fairly simple to write and if 
so can someone point me to some relevant documentation.
