Moved your settings directories back for starts.  Then, after logging
in, run Metacity.  (Open the run applications dialog, type in metacity) 
This tends to happen to me a lot with the version of Metacity in FC1
(GNOME 2.4), I don't see it happen on FC2 (GNOME 2.6) though.
