1) launch the "Configuration Editor" (gconf-editor) and uncheck the
"/apps/nautilus/desktop/computer_icon_visisble" key.

2) from the gnome-terminal, run: 
"gconftool-2 --type boolean --set  
/apps/nautilus/desktop/computer_icon_visible false"
