gnome-config broken on SUSE

While trying to compile "gpredict" on an SUSE V10 box, I discovered that
gnome-config is completely screwed.

For example:
"gnome-config --libs gnomecanvaspixbuf" knows nothing of the library.

"gnome-config" with no options yields only a few know libraries.
I have every gnome and gnome-devel packages installed, gnome-config only
finds a few.

I know nothing about how the gnome-config system is supposed to work,
can anyone offer some tips?
