After experiencing a bit I found only one, although very "hard" solution
to your problem. Press the up or down key, so now you have only one item
selected. With Ctrl-click or Ctrl-Space you can unselect it, and now you
can select a single file with another Ctrl-click.
Another method may be when you right click on the desired item and press
Esc to disband the popup menu. Just be creative :)
