Which version of openSUSE? I don't get this error with 11.1 with a test
user where no configuration has been done.

Because KDE uses qt for YaST.

Many folks like the qt interface for YaST better, even if they are smart
enough to prefer Gnome and GTK for everything else (the software
management screen is *much* less confusing for example).
If you have KDE installed also it is easy to switch YaST to qt by going
[in YaST :)] to System | /etc/sysconfig Editor | yast2 | GUI and select
qt in two places: WANTED_SHELL and WANTED-GUI.
At least this will get rid of the error.
