You need some settings. You can find it in freebsd.org site (in section about Gnome - Gnome FAQ)
In short
1. in rc.conf you need set gnome_enable=yes (not gdm_enable=yes) - in this case hal, dbus will start automatically
2. in /etc/fstab you need set
proc /proc procfs rw 0 0
3. if your gnome starts slowly in /usr/local/share/xsession/gnome.desktop you should replace
exec = gnome-session
on
exec = gnome-session --purge-delay=5000 --warn-delay=5000
