Gnome freezes at the lock screen

Hello,

gnome 3.10.2
opensuse 13.1
linux 3.11.10-7-desktop x86_64

At random intervals Gnome freezes at the lock screen which shows a
background image and the time in hh:mm:ss. The time display does not
change. It responds to no key strokes.

I can log on to the computer from another host and send SIGHUP to the
gnome-session which resets it. However, this is inelegant and requires
root privilege.

Any suggestions why Gnome freezes?
Or a user method to reset the desktop?
