[gnome-love] compiling gnome 2 - stubborn pango

Following the GIG to get Gnome 2 up and running.
glib compiled and installed successfully. Having added

/usr/local/gnome2/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf, I ran
ldconfig -v
and libglib-2.0.so.0 is there. But next, pango
compilation fails.

Some help here about what's wrong with the Glib I just
