Yeah, fontconfig worked for me, so... *shrug*.
atk didn't want to play without the following change:

md5sum="df1564d233944b1be0c596761464e53e" size="632397"/>
+ <source href="http://download.gnome.org/sources/atk/1.12/atk-1.12.1.tar.bz2"

Ugh, this was apparently another case of the *exact* same release
number being used twice with separate tarballs. See
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/ftp-release-list/2006-July/msg00031.html
and http://mail.gnome.org/archives/ftp-release-list/2006-July/msg00130.html.
cc'ing Bill, as it looks like perhaps he meant to release 1.12.2 and
just accidentally overwrote? (Not sure, it could be the case that the
old 1.12.1 tarball was broken and he was just trying to repair, but
two weeks between releases seems to strongly indicate otherwise)
After that I got as far as dbus. Despite having the required patch I got
stuck with an error along the lines of
${prefix}/var/run/system_bus_socket - file doesn't exist
Any pointers?
No clue, it worked for me. You can try filing a bug against dbus.
