How about this as a simple and easy solution? Simply require any
application to echo what its doing to stdout. That way when (and only
when) a user launches an application from the command line it will
display what it is doing. This will mean that no new windows will need
to be created, and this won't bother basic users because they will
never launch an application through the terminal.

Isn't that what GUIs on Linux are about, options? Unlike Windows or
even Mac I can choose my fvwm, fluxbox, GNOME, or even KDE, or not to
use one at all. GNOME should be easy enough for novice/non-geeks to
use productively without crippling developers/hackers/power users. Not
having this doesn't cripple us, but adding it could help those
aspiring to be a developer/hacker/power user.
