Try with:
gtk_widget_show_all (toplevelwidget)


Also you might want to check out the Gtk::Builder API
(http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/2.12/GtkBuilder.html), I think the
development is moving towards using it instead glade (but I've read
that it has some problems).
