Settings seem right for m505 but no connection

Patched, built, and installed pilot-link-10.99, gnome-pilot-0.1.65, and gnome-pilot-conduits-0.9 successfully.  I added the gnome-pilot applet to my panel and went through the druid (which threw error dialogs constantly as I went through the steps) and got all the settings in.  The settings are {"Handspring USB", 57600, /dev/pilot} and /dev/pilot is soft-linked to /dev/usb/ttyUSB1.

I push the hotsync button, and dmesg shows the following lines:
hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 9
usbserial.c: Palm M505 converter detected
visor.c: visor_startup
visor.c: visor_startup - Set config to 1
visor.c: Palm M505: Number of ports: 2
visor.c: Palm M505: port 1, is for Generic use and is bound to ttyUSB0
visor.c: Palm M505: port 2, is for HotSync use and is bound to ttyUSB1
visor.c: visor_startup - length = 20, data = "" 00 00 00 63 6e 79 73 02 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 01 02 02
visor.c: visor_startup - length = 20, data = "" 00 00 00 63 6e 79 73 02 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 01 02 02
usbserial.c: Palm M505 converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)
usbserial.c: Palm M505 converter now attached to ttyUSB1 (or usb/tts/1 for devfs)

But gnome-pilot never sees the m505 and never syncs.  I tried linking /dev/pilot to /dev/ttyUSB1 but that didn't make any difference.  Any ideas?  TIA.
