Are you running gnome-pilot 2.0.12? If so, have you added
the USB vendor/product ID for the T5? Find the
devices.xml file, (probably in /usr/share/gnome-pilot/)
and add a line for the T5. The device id is "0830" and the
product_id is "0061", judging from the log messages you
posted.
If you still get timeouts, try increasing the 'timeout'
from the default (2) to 100. See recent postings to this
list about the Treo650.
gpilotd shouldn't care about device files being created during
a sync: it watches the /proc/bus/usb/devices file, so should
only attempt a sync when the device file exists.

p.s. if you start gpilotd in a terminal window, before starting
the setup wizard, then you will see more progress messages when
trying to connect to your T5.
