After getting it to work with the three second trick I 
decided to try to install some pdbs with pilot-xfer.  I tried:

]pilot-xfer -i Pirates.pdb

I immediately got the no /dev/pilot message before I even 
had a chance to hit the hotsync button.

I decided to try hitting the hotsync button first and I
got:

Listening to port: /dev/pilot

Please press the HotSync button now...
Error accepting data on /dev/pilot

I decided to try jpilot.  Not a good idea.  It changed 
something and broke what I had done already.  Fortunately I 
was able to fix it by opening all the settings dialogs and 
closing them again.

Anyway I think it has something to do with the fact that 
/dev/pilot is only created after the hotsync button is pressed.

Is there another way to transfer .prcs and .pdbs?  Something 
like a directory that is a queue that holds them for the 
next hotsync?
