a kernel oops is a kernel bug. your palm, which I very much doubt is
dodgy, should absolutely not be capable of crashing your kernel.
I've had a quick look at the linux-usb-devel mailing list, and it seems
as though several usbserial bugs have (very) recently been fixed: eg:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=15673271
Is there any kernel update available for you, in any bleeding edge
ubuntu release?
Frankly, I'm relieved your problems aren't gnome-pilot specific, because
that was inconsistent with our suspicion of kernel-level trouble. Not
that it's a relief for you :(
You could try posting your message to the linux-usb-devel list to see if
it is recognised as a known issue and/or trawling the archives to see if
it's fixed.
