I am not working on it, and I do not know of anyone tackling that
problem.

I have not taken a very complete look.  I only remember that the rgba
branch seemed to have some duplicated metafile like driver in there.
Can this code be merged/dropped?  And what is the purpose of it?

We should merge the rgba branch into the main tree as soon as
possible.
