[Gnome-print] default font problems

I've just upgraded gnumeric & gnome-print & now gnumeric won't work. It
says it can't find a suitable default font & that there is no valid
entry for Helvetica in my fontmap2 file. 

I have a fontmap2 file (in /etc/gnome/fonts which I also copied to
/usr/share/fonts) which appears to have a valid Helvetica entry (the
files quoted exist). Abiword works OK.

I've been having font problems for a while (no window titles, evolution
& balsa crash when adding an attachment complaining "can't find default
font"), but gnumeric not working is new.

Any ideas?
