Which version of font installer?
Can you run it inside debugger?

gnome-font-install --clean --target=/tmp/foo your_font_dir

should do what is needed.
There have been various problems with installer and all known
crash bugs have been fixed. But it depends on FreeType2 and
I have encountered typefaces, that have crashed freetype -
which is not under our control. If I'd get backtrace, I could
tell whether that is the case.
You may also try to install latest freetype2 library and
look, whether that helps.
