Hi,
If the files in /etc were damaged here it's a bug, please file on
bugzilla.gnome.org. Though, I'm not at all surprised that things
didn't work; GNOME is probably writing all sorts of little dotfiles to
'/' and I don't think you want that.
To recover from something like this, if you just take the gconftool
invocation from the %post of any package and run it with
/etc/gconf/schemas/*.schemas it will probably work.
That will regenerate all the /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults
files.
