*sigh*  We really need this for a lot of things don't we?  It's needed
(or at least would be really nice to avoid code duplication) for
libgnome (bug 166722) and metacity (bug 167630), and has been worked
around in galeon & epiphany so far by using gnome_vfs + gnome_desktop
although it appears that workaround wasn't quite good enough from your
comments...  It could probably help remove a lot of code duplication
in nautilus and may be useful in other places too.  Anyway, the bug
number for gnome_vfs_application_launch + startup notification is
