The only thing I can suggest you is to use ALSA and native ALSA.
You can also send me by private mail a debug=3 output of 0.99.

I don't see any logical reason why 0.98.5 wouldn't have the problem as
it really seems to be a perms problem (as it works as root). Very
weird...
