To all, I also think I need to apologize, our mail exchanges yesterday were not constructive and certainly not benefic for our projects, all this for a simple problem that could have been resolved efficiently in maximum two mails. Craig has always listened to me and helped me when it was possible. I'm waiting for Craig to propose a solution and a skeleton, and I will implement it for the ALSA and Video4Linux plugins. I will ask Julien to implement it for Firewire as he has an AVC camera. The requirement is simple : - GUI users do not need to know real device names - command-line users should be allowed to use real device names - it would be better if GUI applications wouldn't have to add a specific behavior for each of the supported plugins to hide themselves real device names Perhaps adding a parameter to GetInputDeviceNames to determine the type of device names to return (real/friendly/both) would be enough. But perhaps it is not clean. I don't really have an opinion here but I'm ready to change most of the Linux plugins for the best of both projects.
