Your description looks very much like what linux now does for the mice.
I remember years ago when you had to have a mouse on /dev/psaux, and
what you had to do to use an USB mouse... all of this is changed now :
x.org just uses /dev/input/mice, which mixes all available pointing devices.
A much better solution indeed!
