I just made a few test calls with 3 different providers, but I was not
satisfied with the sound quality of one of them.
1) ekiga.net echo service at 500 ekiga net (iLBC, GSM), everything was
perfectly fine
2) a PSTN-to-SIP call (G.711µ) with Digisip (swedish), quality was top
again (the jitter buffer was at 0 ms; there is 5 km between the provider
and me)
3) another PSTN-to-SIP call (G.711µ, GSM), this time with sipgate
(austrian). I did hear (and was able to understand) the voice, but there
were pretty annoying hard-sounding and distorted (a bit blurred) noises.
Difficult to describe. The jitter buffer was at around 50 ms.
First I thought the sound was overamplified, so I tried to adjust the
in/out levels, but it did not make a difference.
Then I tried to do the same with X-Lite (wine-emulation) and the quality
was perfect. I tried it a couple of times (switched Ekiga/X-Lite) and I
got always the same result: good quality with X-Lite, bad quality with
Ekiga.
What can be the reason for this? Can I provide something else to track
down the problem?
Maybe related to :

?
We're still looking for more information on the matter...
