I like this idea in general, even though there are solutions to play two
sounds on the sound card at the same time either using drivers or sound
daemons, I'd like to see programs like ohphone and GM using the speaker to
ring.

I wonder if there is a driver like the one that used to exist in windows
that allows to use the beeper like if it was a playback sound card :-?

That would leed to a more standard solution and people could use two cards
or a card and the speaker, and it wouldn't have the problems of who owns the
console device or things like that.
