Ben,
There are other emails on this list about headphones or speakers.
In my experience, there has always been an improvement in voice quality
when changing from speakers to something else (headphones or handset)

As far as jitter buffer size, TRY a bigger value. I have no idea what your
network latency is. I am not a crystal ball gazing psychic to know what
will work for you.
200 ms "should" be enough, but 400ms will most probably be enough.
Is there any difference in quality (apart from latency) if you switch from
200 to 400ms?
1000ms will be enough for all but the most patholigical of networks.
TRY different values.

Finally, before the various experts on this list criticise the openh323
code, remember this:
Craig and Robert use openh323 code (plus quicknet cards) to talk all the
time between Australia, England, America and New Zealand. If the code was
faulty, would they fix it? yes. I suggest the problem is elsewhere.
The real check is:
Do you have the same quality problems if you use ohphone?
There may be a configuration issue for your machine.
Good luck on finding this: you have to battle gconf, the quicknet kernel
module, library versions, and gnomemeeting versions.
Derek.
