Yes, try to shut it down. Sometimes, artsd can make an exclusive use of
the soundcard and prevent other programs to use it!

The script that initialises ALSA will touch the mixer settings.
Aumix has no effect on ALSA, at least on Debian.

Yes, perhaps because of artsd. Try to remove artsd and tell us if it works.
