As pwlib (the library which is used for audio and video i/o) has no native
support for alsa, you have to use the oss emulation of alsa, which works fine
for me and many other people. So using /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer is normally
the right decision.

The sb16 is not a good choice for full duplex audio, you can only output 8Bit
sound when you are recording, giving you some extra noise. At least, the
following should let you hear the input (it will have a delay, for me it is
approximately half a second):

The G.711 codec is part of the "out of the box" install of netmeeting, but if
the log says, it has connected (independent of the codec) then it really has
connected and the problem has some other reason.
