Don't know what the effects of different values for this variable are, but in
the wine mailinglist (see
http://www.winehq.com/index.php?issue=163#Making%20Wine%20Run%20With%20glibc%202.3
) a workaround for wine is done by using export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5; wine.
