Hmm.. I removed the hand-installed rpms from last month,
and installed fresh rpms from the 9.0 cd. did the permissions-fix.
app comes up and appears to work well.

nobody on seconix is around to test, so I wasn't actually able
to connect with anyone - but the app comes up fine, and gets past
the mutex problem. I suspect it's okay.

It seems likely that just removing the rpms and re-installing will
fix the problem.
