It is a sad story - my cam is too broken to be used as a $1500 camera now.  It
chews on tapes and very often refuses to eject them. It seems all Sony stuff is
made to break right after the warranty expires.

When I said "I could really use this feature" I was referring mostly to the
problems I usually have with microphones and alsa. The camera has a much better
microphone after all. This is another + that should be added to the list Julien
already made.
