Well at last some success. I had a look at /var/log/messages and
it said it could not find a sensor. Rooting around on the web
site you suggested and http://alpha.dyndns.org/ov511/install.html
gave me a clue. I did modprobe ovcamchip and now it works!!!!
...... BUT ...... only as root for now.
I guess I will now try some of Anne's suggestions and try to get
the modules automatically installed.
