What on Earth has that got to do with anything? I have
a choice between ALSA and OSS, and I've chosen ALSA
for BOTH of the sound devices in this machine because
that is the best choice for them BOTH. Yes, I have two
sound devices in this machine. No, I didn't mention
that before because it's not relevant to gnomemeeting.
And if you're going to suggest removing the second
sound device just for the "honour" of using
gnomemeeting then I will have no choice but to laugh
at you.

To summarise:
- my Linux box has a SB-Live! card, and another
soundcard which ISN'T an SB-Live!
- I use ALSA, not OSS
- get over it.

If you'd *read* my posts properly then you'd have
realised that I *wasn't* asking for your help. I was
actually trying to help *you* by describing a
real-world problem that I had encountered, which had
resulted in an EXTREMELY UNPLEASANT end-user
experience. I had even gone to the trouble of
diagnosing it myself and providing a patch.

How stupid of me. What a *waste* of my time.

You are referring to the soundcore multiplexor. Of
course, that doesn't actually provide any sound card
functionality. It's just a way for ALSA's OSS
compatibility layer to provide device nodes.

Nope, you've misunderstood again. I *AM* using the OSS
emulation. I know - I put it there.

Except that my box is *not* incorrectly set up.

Yes, I came to this list in a *constructive* frame of
mind... How nice of you to notice.

An end user provides constructive criticism and you
call it 'bitching'??

This link says that MIDI doesn't work on the Live
**Drive**, not on the Live!. The Live Drive is an
add-on device. I don't own one. However, wavetable
MIDI works fine on my machine, and has done for years.

The PCI card has been revised many times over the
years. My particular revision works fine. The ALSA
developers are concerned with all revisions, of
course.

This will be my last post on this subject. I came here
with an honest suggestion for a real problem, and all
I have found is a complete disregard for the end-user
that verges on what can only be described as
'contempt'. I have better things to do than be
patronised, lectured, and called either incompetent or
a liar. And like it says in the subject line, I
already *have* a patch.

Sincerely,
Chris
