You didn't mention how you invoke GM. Do you kill artsd before running
it or do you use artsdsp. I always kill artsd* and GM works fine. I have
heard it is possible to use artsdsp as a wrapper, though it gives bad
results.

* actually, I usually forget and GM hangs and locks up my camera, so I
have to reboot :-(
