Well, yes, but.... 

Most users find it inconvenient or difficult to run multiple programs
for this one purpose. Sometimes it is because the software in question
stuffs the sound card for other clients, sometimes it is just because
the software is too hard to set up.

In my view, that has been the spectacular success of Skype. For most
users it is simple to install and it works. No need to fiddle firewalls
or anything else. That is a great thing and the reason that I use Skype
to talk to family and others who haven't a clue about computers.

I would love for GM to be an all purpose solution to the video/phone
problem. Ideally talk to my knowlegeable friends who use SIP/IAX but
also talk to my not-so-knowledgeable friends who think Skype is the
cat's pajamas.
