yes more precisely (and it is a FAQ, I should update), Debian and Ubuntu
have a bug and ship with the V4L2 plugin as default, while V4L1 is
supported by most drivers.
apt-get install libpt-plugins-v4l, then selecting V4L as plugin in GM,
should fix your problem.
