OK, I sorted out that problem by trying to compile the cvs version and finding 
a number of required gnome files missing.  I cleared up those missing 
dependencies but when trying to compile the cvs version ran into a bunch of 
problems with autoconf which I don't have the patience to try  and sort out.

So I went back to 1.9 and tried recompiling again.  I found that the problem 
reported earlier was now cleared up but compilation stopped further on.  
Perhaps you have some idea what the following error messages mean.
