A bit more ... it only started doing this after I did an yum update on the system
Kernel 2.1.14-1.1656 doesn't work so I went back to 2.6.14-1.1653 and it is OK

If I run tvtime to check I have an image - OK
close tvtime and open ekiga video preview is black
unplug camera and it goes blue
close ekiga and open tvtime screen is black
unload bttv and reload - tvtime is OK again
do you need more scientific info off me ?
