I want to thank both of you for your kind and prompt help and advise. I now have 
three approaches, and one is sure to work, the third being, on the Mandriva side, 
the developer who created the ekiga rpm compiled under gnome 2.10 is says 
he will soon compile it under gnome 2.12, as others are also asking for it. So, 
if worse comes to worse, I will be in business when he does that....

But, in the meantime, I am going to take your suggested approach and see 
what happens.
