Well, I am finally up to the point where I am getting the same error
as Murray is that started this whole process.

I did discover that apparently gcc 3.2.2 has a bug in it that resulted
in the compiler error that I was getting (see
http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=9602 ) which was fixed for
gcc 3.2.3 though may still be in gcc 3.3

I managed to find rpms for gcc 3.2.3 and updating to that solved that
problem.

Now to try and figure out the linker error.
