Fixed in gal HEAD (hopefully).
Jody: You built libunicode from CVS, right?
Lee: Try
ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/unstable/sources/libunicode/libunicode-0.4.gnome.tar.gz
compile + intall + clean gal's config.cache + compile gal + install gal

Is it just me or does -lunicode not getting added to the Makefile in

Please do a clean reinstall of gal. libunicode is included via
<prefix>/lib/galConf.sh
After a clean reinstall of everything, there is no libunicode in my
galConf.sh . . .
Hmm, you are not the only one with this problem.
Lets peel the onion one more layer. Check the results of running
gnome-config --libs unicode
That will probably fail.
Yes, it failed.
Then you need to double check the prefix that you installed libunicode
and the prefix you installed gnome-libs. Also check that you do not
have multiple copies of gnome-config.
Check, check, check. Weird.
