what happened to custom menu accelerators?

In Gnumeric (as well as The Gimp, it seems) is is possible to press a key
combo while a menu is open and the mouse is over a menu item to set the combo
just presses as the new accelerator for that menu item. Except that this no
longer works in the latest Gimp. My old custom accelerators seem to have
disappeared as well. Does anyone know if this is a bug or was intentionally
removed? How can I get it back? Thanks!

(Gnumeric 0.69, gnome-print 0.29, Linux 2.2, libc6.1, Debian, Alpha architecture)
