0.67 was released primarily to use the new version of libxml 1.8.14
That would certainly break .gnumeric loading, but would not explain
the xls, or operational crashes.  Please try a build from tarball
The config script should give you a better idea of what is going on.

Please read carefully.  The second listing is only relevant for the
bonobo build.
     With the newer bonobo you will also want a newer gnome-libs
     gnome-libs      >= 1.2.7        (gnome-libs 2.0 is not supported)
