Mixing Symbol with other font

Hello,
        I often use a spreadsheet to make aerodynamic
calculations.  For convenient notation I need to type
Greek symbols with latin chars in the same cell,
sometimes as subscripts.

It seems Gnumeric won't let me type (I code here as
Latex) \alpha_{takeoff} in the same cell.  
I often check the progress of Gnumeric but I can never
use it for my work because of that limitation.
