print preview and print problem

I have a problem printing from gnumeric.  Print preview just gives me a
an empty window, and print brings up a "printing failed" window.  This
is 100% reproducible even from empty spreadsheets.

I have no problems printing from oter apps including abiword.  I have
tried deinstall with purge, and reinstall to no avail.  I have re-run
gnome-font-install with and without the -u option.  No dice.

I am running debian GNU/Linux and have tried gnumeric from both the
testing and unstable distributions.  This smells like a wierd
configuration problem on my box rather than a general problem with
gnumeric or gnome-print but I am at a loss to know how to proceed.  All
suggestions are welcomed.

I am running a 2.4.9 SMP kernel:
