failing to find libole2

Hi folks,

checking the archive I found several peple having this problem, but no
helpful solution.
I try to install gnumeric on slackware 7.1 (my first installation of any
gnu-program)

Even after I installed libole2-0.2.4.tar.gz from the given ftp site I
get the same error meassage.
I also tried ./configure --prefix=/usr for libole2
I can not find a liboleConf.sh
gnome-config --libs libole2 returns: Unknown library 'libole2'

./configure of gnumeric returns:
checking for libole2 >= 0.2.4      ... <FAIL> not found
configure: error: This version of gnumeric requires an external
libole2 library the latest version can be obtained from
ftp://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/unstable/sources/libole2/

what can I do?
