Continued plugin problems

I just recompiled gnumeric-1.0.4 from the tarball to attempt to resolve my
plugin problems (posted a couple weeks ago on the list), but when I start
gnumeric, it still complains:

        Errors while initializing plugin system

Errors while reading info about available plugins

Errors occurred while reading plugn informations from file
"/usr/local/lib/gnumeric/1.0.4-bonobo/plugins/python-loader/plugin.xml".

and so on for every plugin in the plugins directory.

Plugins worked fine with gnumeric-0.76.

Permissions also appear to be fine, and in any case, not even "root" can
get the plugins to load.

There are no other versions of gnumeric installed; I completely and
deliberately uninstalled my previous build and earlier versions to avoid
conflicts. All package prerequistites listed in the gnumeric-1.0.4/README
file are met or exceeded.

System is a PII-350 with 384MB RAM running kernel 2.4.16/glibc-2.13.

Any ideas? Is it possible for me to use the plugins from v0.76 with
v1.0.4?
