Jason and others:

 I got it working. The automatic calculation was turned off, when the *.xls,
made by Gnumeric, was opened in Microsoft Excel. In Excel's
Options->Calculation tab click on the Automatic radio button, in the
calculation window.

Ooh, I've seen this same problem.  Gnumeric 1.2* to Exec '97
I had to hit f2+enter on a lot of cells
