You should not need to gzip it.  It should be sufficient to give the
importer a bit of a clue that its a gnumeric file
    <file>.xml will work, and will export uncompressed
    <file>.gnumeric will also import uncompressed, but will save
    uncompressed.
 
On a different note, does anyone know about the HSSF seriliser used by cocoon, 
that takes this type of XML as input ?

A little bit.  We know more about the format than the current state
of the implementation.  What are you trying to do ?  If all you need
is to generate xls from some data there are easier ways to do it.

1) you can use perl bindings to produce the xls directly
2) gnumeric can be configured to do the transition directly.
